1984 was the first year that KEGS were banned from the infield. WBAL also did a story on that here!
The first video is hilarious and filled with mid-1980’s references and looks. The video shows that even back then Baltimore had its fair share of bandwagon baseball fans of other teams. The Detroit “fan” was unfortunately correct. The Tigers ended up winning the World Series in October of 1984. I bet that guy claims to be a Yankees fan now.
I was a very little kid in 1984, but I can remember Gate Dancer winning the race. I watched it on TV with my father. I can remember him talking about how hot it was outside and that it appeared the horses were sweating more than usual. I can remember it being a warm day. Archived weather reports say that the high was 87 degrees.
