Another example of why Baltimore’s current arena does not need to be replaced

In the recent past I have strongly argued for keeping our current arena. A new arena would be an unnecessary and expensive project that Baltimore can’t afford. The current arena makes a profit and brings all sorts of events to Baltimore.

This week it was announced that the Colonial Athletic Association’s annual men’s basketball tournament will take place at First Mariner Arena in March of 2014, 2015, and 2016. A college basketball postseason tournament has not been held at the arena since 1995 and one of the arguments that supporters of a new arena bring up is that we need a new arena to attract a postseason tournament. I know this tournament is not part of the big NCAA tournament, but it is a mid-major conference’s postseason tournament and it proves that Baltimore does not need to spend $300million to attract legitimate postseason college basketball to Baltimore. I congratulate the people who got this deal done.
